In June 2003 the Federal Trade Commission (FTC), in conjunction with the Federal Communications Commission (FCC), began accepting requests from consumers to be placed on the National Do Not Call Registry. This list is intended to prohibit telemarketers from calling phone numbers that have been registered.
If you have an active email account, you may register on the National Do Not Call Registry website. Otherwise, call 888-382-1222 (TTY 866-290-4236) from the number you wish to register. There is no charge to register. Registrations do not expire; if you have previously registered your number, there is no need to register again.
Telemarketers are required to check the list of registered consumers every three months to determine who does not want to be called and remove those numbers from their call lists. If you have registered, you may still receive calls from political organizations, charities, telephone surveyors, or companies with which you have an existing business relationship.
Filing Complaints
If you have registered your phone number and you receive an unwanted telemarketing call, you may file a complaint on the registry's website or the FCC Consumer Complaint Center. You must know either the name or the phone number of the company that called and the date of the call.
