Federal Do Not Call Registry


On Friday, June 27, 2003, the Federal Trade Commission (FTC), in conjunction with the Federal Communications Commission (FCC), began to accept requests from consumers to be put on its "Do-Not-Call" registry. This national list is intended to prohibit telemarketers from calling people on phone numbers which have been registered.

Consumers with an active email account may register online at DONOTCALL.GOV. Consumers also may sign up by calling toll-free, 1.888.382.1222 (TTY 1.866.290.4236), from the number they wish to register. There is no charge to register. Registrations on the National Do Not Call Registry DO NOT EXPIRE. If you have previously registered your number, there is no need to register again.

Beginning in September 2003, telemarketers must check the list of registered consumers every three months to determine who does not want to be called. Consumers registered by August 31, 2003, should start receiving fewer telemarketing calls by October 1. For consumers who register after August 31, telemarketing companies will have up to three months to remove the number from their call lists. Registered consumers may still receive calls from political organizations, charities, telephone surveyors or companies with which they have an existing business relationship.

If you register your phone number before August 31, 2003 and you receive an unwanted telemarketing call after the FCC begins enforcing the registry on October 1, 2003, you may file a complaint on the registry's website. You must know either the name or the phone number of the company which called and the date of the call. If you add your number to the Do-Not-Call registry after August 31, telemarketers have up to three months from your registration date to remove your name from their call lists.
